Week8: The Hour of the Star

Hi, everyone. Welcome to my week 8's blog. I read the book "The Hour of the Star" this week and have many thoughts to share with you.  This book is written by  Clarice Lispector. This book was written shortly before her death. Although it is not an autobiographical novel, some of the things that happened in the book also reflect Lispector's life, such as the poor life of the heroine Macabea. It is very similar to Lispector's childhood life. At the end of the book, the heroine goes to visit a fortune teller, and Lispector also visited a fortune teller before. The initial impression this book gave me was one of confusion and strangeness. I feel like I often use the word 'confusion' when writing blog posts, but sometimes I really don't understand why the author chose to write this way, so I can only use the word 'confusion' to describe it. At the beginning of the book, it describes a girl through the eyes of a writer. The girl depicted by the writ...

Week6: Black Shack Alley

Hi, everyone! Welcome to my sixth blog! I was tired this week since I have three midterms, but this wonderful book relaxes me. I hope you have time to read my blog. This week I read "Black Shack Alley", it is a novel written by Joseph Zobel in 1950. There is also a movie adapted from this novel. I watched part of the movie while reading the book. First of all, I like this book very much. I think this book is of great educational significance in many aspects. This book allows me to see the strength and resilience of people who dare to resist fate. This book is written from the perspective of the protagonist  José,  from the beginning of the story, we can see the hardship of his life. The good thing Jose thinks is a piece of bread, which makes me feel pitiful for him. Although his life was difficult, from his description I did not feel that he was critical of his own life.  On the contrary, I feel he lives optimistically. Although the events he encounters as an ad...

Week 4: The Shrouded Woman

Hi, everyone! Happy weekend! Welcome to my fourth blog. I am so excited since I have already read four books. This week's book is kind of special, I have a lot of thoughts to share with you.  This week we read a book called "The Shrouded Woman", this book was written by María Luisa Bombal .  When I first saw this book's title, I wondered if it might be a horror story, since the name sounded a bit eerie. Of course, this thought was dismissed as soon as I began reading. The novel's theme is quite innovative, centered around a deceased woman named Ana María. Even though she lies on her deathbed, she can still see and hear everything. She witnesses relatives and friends coming to bid her farewell. The appearance of these people opens the door for the woman to revisit memories of the past. I feel like the depiction is reminiscent of an out-of-body experience; although Ana's physical body has died, her soul remains. This makes me doubt whether a person's soul ca...

Week3: Mad Toy

Hi everyone. Welcome to my third blog! This week I read the book "Mad Toy" and have many thoughts to share with you.  This book is written by Roberto Arlt. He  writes this book from the perspective of a lower-class youth named Silvio. From Silvio's descriptions, it seems that the people around him are not good individuals . The first person he describes is an old cobbler, who is portrayed as hunchbacked, with a face covered in stubble, a haggard complexion, and a slight limp. Next is Irzubeta, the second person he describes. He is tall and thin, with freckles all over his forehead and a slanting gaze. What shocked me was the family of Irzubeta, his family is a family that buys things on credit and has creditors. Despite their impoverished state, they are still quite arrogant, viewing those creditors as untouchables . This makes it difficult for me to imagine their psychological state. When Silvio describes the people around him, it is not difficult to see that he lives i...
